George E. Huffman is a visual artist who was born near Philadelphia, raised outside of New York City, developed as an artist in Tucson, Arizona and has called Austin, Texas home since 2002. He began his artistic career as a painter and printmaker after earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from Villanova University in 1987.
Huffman's pieces stand out for their bold compositional choices, strong sense of color, and inventive merging of abstraction with figuration. Through a dynamic and multi-layered oil painting process, these works evoke questions and invite contemplation.
His art is a powerful study in solitude and emotional resonance. Huffman's frequent use of a single female figure placed within an impasto ground with radiant skies immediately draws the viewer in, encouraging contemplation of her inner world. The figures’ pose sometimes exude confidence, and sometimes vulnerability, and stand in sharp relief against the painterly, textural backgrounds. This tension creates a dialogue between the real and the imagined, the past and the present, and highlights the friction between surface textures. The tactile quality of Huffman’s oil paintings is of notable strength, giving the work a sense of depth and vitality.
The use of nostalgic figures is highly effective as they release the viewer from any sense of time or place.
