Kolander's work is largely based on personal observations and experiences. He begins with small studies and renderings meant to translate into different possible interpretations. Elements are taken out of context and recombined into new environments where they are invariably reinterpreted with different twists and meanings through common symbols, misleading clues, apparent non sequiturs and juxtoposition. Kolander's primary mediums of drawing, painting and printmaking similarly evolve, influence and inform eachother as he continues to explore new compositions and techniques while revisiting, improving or abandoning old ones.
