Quincunx
noun: quincunx; plural noun: quincunxes
1. An arrangement of five objects with four at the corners of a square or rectangle and the fifth at its center, used for the five on dice or playing cards, and in planting trees.
“I fell in love with the word quincunx. A friend, Amy Smith, from Philadelphia, repeated it many times before I could hear and envision it. A quincunx has a magnetism within it wherever it appears in space. I choreographed a quintet, Animals on the Beach, that contained the possibility for quincunxes to spontaneously arise over the course of the dance. Some of the art in this exhibit reflects my continuing fascination with the quincunx.” Deborah Hay
